A stage in the Downfall: Two propaganda sheets are closed: Star & Güneş

It seems that two of the many pro-government dailies’ income were tied to Istanbul municipality’s resources. When AKP lost the municipality, they lost the resources to continue. These were extremely aggressive dailies that attacked opponents on a daily basis. Star acted as an ideological sheet that propagated AKP’s vision while Güneş acted as a hostile tabloid. I will have no pity for the closure of two dailies that are labeled as newspapers. These were, in fact, propaganda sheets with such a vicious agenda. Hopefully, this is a stage in the downfall of a revengeful government…

The Committee to Protect Journalists – Dec 10, 9:00 PM

For the fourth consecutive year, at least 250 journalists are imprisoned globally as authoritarians like Xi Jinping, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Mohammed bin Salman, and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi show no signs of letting up on the critical media.

Hail to the person who was a valiant human rights defender in 2019 in Turkey: Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu (@gergerliogluof)

Ahval has chosen a leading figure in Turkey’s human rights struggle, pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) lawmaker Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, as its 2019 person of the year.

The 54-year-old activist, author and journalist has worked tirelessly to defend the rights of tens of thousands of people in the country dismissed from their jobs by government decrees following a coup attempt in July 2016.

Gergerlioğlu himself is one of the some 150,000 public employees suspended or sacked from their jobs as part of an ongoing crackdown by Turkish government on those allegedly linked to the failed putsch.

Elected as a deputy for the pro-Kurdish HDP in June 2018, Gergerlioğlu has made it a mission to continue advocating for those victimised by government policies, regardless of their ethnic, religious or ideological background….

Journalists from daily Sözcü have been sentenced to prison for “willingly aiding the Gülen organization or parallel state structures despite not being part of the hierarchical organization.”

“This was the verdict we expected. Of course this is what comes out of the current state of justice,” said Editor-in-Chief Metin Yılmaz after the hearing.

With a court ruling against his release from detention last Tuesday, businessman and rights activist Osman Kavala has been sentenced to welcome a third new year in jail.

Following his arrest in October 2017, Kavala was put in a Kafkaesque position of more than a year of imprisonment without a charge. The indictment, when it eventually emerged, accused Kavala of orchestrating the organisation of the anti-government Gezi Park protests back in 2013. While just one of many indicted, Kavala is the only defendant in detention in the Gezi Park trial.

#Anthropology roundup: “Why Winter Solstice Celebrations Persist

In Uncategorized on December 29, 2019 at 18:49

https://ift.tt/2QADFto

At the ancient Maya-Toltec ceremonial complex of Chichén Itzá, tucked into the dense jungles of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the El Castillo step pyramid rises from the center of a vast plaza. Flanked by open-mouthed stone serpents at its base, the pyramid—constructed in phases, possibly starting as early as A.D. 550—was an important center of worship. But for those who knew where to look, it was also a meticulously built testament to the celestial turning points of each year.

Bitcoin’s emergence as a global digital currency has been as revolutionary as it has been erratic. But while fledgling investors obsess over every fluctuation in the cryptocurrency market, nation-states are more interested in the underlying blockchain technology and its ability to revolutionize how business is done on the internet and beyond. VICE’s Michael Moynihan travels to Russia with Vitalik Buterin, inventor of the ethereum blockchain, to get a front-row seat to the geopolitical tug of war over Internet 3.0.

Analytics firm App Annie revealed data about the most-downloaded apps and games of the past ten years. Most of it is about what you’d expect: microtransaction games dominated, as did social media and telecommunications. But there is one small detail that’s a bit galling: Facebook, quite literally, owned this decade. On App Annie’s list of the top apps by all-time downloads, the apps holding the top four slots are, in order, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram. It’s not really a surprise to see that social media has dominated the app market for the entire decade — it wouldn’t be a stretch…

Kanal Istanbul: A debate to end all debates!

Turkey is locked into a single issue and it is not the new wave of Turkey bound refugees from Idlib. It is the mega Canal İstanbul project. It appears, from night shows on TV and the ferocious statements by politicians, that there is a debate in the country. In fact, there is a debate but one over political divisions and identities and not one over facts. This is a project that will have consequences from a military, environment and economic perspective that are long lasting and irreversible. A technical and convincing debate must take place.

Anti-vaccination rubbish comes to Turkey, too

An ultranationalist journalist’s book is a best seller. Unfortunately, anti-vac conspiracy theories are in full force. The journalist, Yalçın, is associated with a highly visited news site, Oda TV, and its propaganda against vaccination continues unabated. Years of the leftist critic of the pharmaceutical industry and anti-Americanism merge to produce this state of affairs… This campaign comes through not religious conservatives but secularist nationalists with a leftist touch…
