AKP leadership: From uneasy openness to explicit homophobia

In Uncategorized on June 30, 2020 at 14:50

Yesterday people shared what Erdoğan’s promised to LGBTI community more than a decade ago. Now the climate changed. In the last couple of years, Turkey’s political leadership and its civil apparatus went off an all-out hate campaign against LGBTI citizens. Just 4-5 years ago, Istanbul Pride March was a significant, colorful, crowded event. Now it is not allowed. Police attack the citizens if they intend to march.

Trolls organize to limit LGBTI citizens’ social media accounts. Unfortunately, social media platforms are again manipulated. Onur Öncü’s account was limited after his post became viral:

One of the major LGBTI organization’s Youtube Live show canceled  with the pretext of violating community rules.

A powerful women GONGO organization was using nationalistic imagery to oppose Pride March…

Erdoğan’s reaching out to youth may have backfired

I was busy with some other stuff and I could not post this on time. Nowadays AKP leadership decided that they may be losing popularity and they are trying to reach out to the younger generations. Erdoğan had a live Youtube session just before the national university entrance examination, whose date has been changed several times that had caused great anxiety. It became a scandal. While Erdoğan was talking to selected students and pre-serviced questions, like and dislike ratios signaled that this would end up as one of the most disliked videos. No worries, there are many other videos with more dislikes! However, at around the 40th minute, the editors stopped the live comments and as of now, the video is closed to comments. In yet another case, young users were active in downvoting Minister of Tourism’s company (ETSTur) app

Coronavirus: Lockdowns in Europe saved millions of lives

The researchers say the death toll would have been “huge” without a lockdown.

The news: Lockdowns in Europe helped stop 3.1 million deaths up to the start of May, researchers have estimated. Strictly limiting people’s movements and enforcing social distancing cut the average number of people that contagious individuals infected by 81%. The measures pushed the epidemic’s reproduction number, R, down from 3.8 to below 1 in all 11 European countries they studied, including Germany, France, Spain, the UK, and Italy, thus drastically curbing transmission. The calculations by the team from Imperial College London are set out in a paper in Nature this week.
