A younger and beardless me in the class.

One of my flagship courses at Bilgi University MA Media Studies program is called “Issues in Cyber-Culture Studies” (MED 512). In the last couple of years, I have chosen one topic/issue for the whole semester such as cryptocurrencies, web history and digital archiving, business models imagined for journalism in the age of new media, big data, collective intelligence and open government. All these ended up with publications or relevant outputs. This year will be a roundup. I have collected many special journal issues in the last few years and I have chosen several relevant topics among them to focus on this semester. Here is the draft syllabus and all readings are for fair use of course…

#Journalism agenda: “The New York Times tested #blockchain to help you identify faked photos…

Can blockchain save journalism? The Magic 8-Ball’s best answer thus far appears to be “Outlook not so good.” Cryptocurrency hype has receded; an Ethereum token, which would have cost you $1,438 two years ago, can now be had for $166. Changing currency doesn’t seem to change anything fundamental about the news industry’s struggles.

But if it can’t save journalism, can blockchain still be helpful to journalism, in defined, targeted ways? That was the question raised last July by the News Provenance Project — a project of The New York Times’ R&D team in collaboration with IBM Garage.

Saving an indigenous language from extinction

The Sami are the only officially recognised indigenous people in the EU and some of their languages are on the brink of extinction.

“A barbarian is someone who looks at culture and finds no beauty at all. A barbarian looks at a mosque or a burial mound, and dreams only of exacting pain.”

—Jason Farago, New York Times critic

Henry Stimson, the U.S. secretary of war during World War II, was a cultured man of the world. When he learned the U.S. was planning to drop its new atomic bomb on Kyoto—an ancient Japanese city he had visited as a young man that brimmed with architectural and artistic treasures—he went to President Harry Truman and insisted it be removed from the target list. Truman agreed, and the “Florence of Japan” was spared.
