HE’S THE WORST: EPSN’s Keith Olbermann last night designated his “World’s Worst Person in Sports” to Turkish Football Federation President Yıldırım Demirören, who is “ready to fine two of league’s imports for what they wore under their jerseys during matches last Friday.” The players, who were both African natives, wore undershirts honoring the late Nelson Mandela(“Olbermann,” ESPN, 12/10).

Savrulmak önce, devasa, uçsuz bucaksız kozmozda, tek başınıza savrulmak… sizi tutan, bir yere bağlayan hiçbir şey olmaksızın, öylesine, tekinsiz ve anlık. Sonra o mutlak sessizlikte süzülmek… Bu sessizlik sadece denizin derinliklerinde olanla ölçüşebilir, ötesi yok. Etrafınız hiçlikle kaplanmışsa yaşama tutunmanın ne anlamı vardır oysa? İşte bu varoluşsal soruyu bu kadar etkileyici bir görsellikle sunmasını eminim bir Hollywood filminden beklemezsiniz. Doğrusu ben de beklemezdim. Uzayda geçen eğlencelik bir gerilim filmi diye girilen Yerçekimi (Gravity) bize çok daha ötesini sundu. Zaman zaman izleyiciler olarak biz de popüler sanattan yüksek sanat estetiğine savruluverdik, uzaydaki savruluşa inat.
Bu türün başyapıtı kabul edilen 1968 yapımı Stanley Kubrick’in 2001: A Space Odyssey filminin duranlığının aksine Yerçekimi bol aksiyonlu bir anlatım sunuyor. Üstelik film, iki de dev Hollywood yıldızını barındırarak gişe başarısını sağlama alıyor. Simülasyon denemelerinden sonra ilk kez uzaya çıkmış mühendis Dr. Ryan Stone rolünde Sandra Bullock yine fit vücudunun avantajlarını kullanıyor. En son onu bu şekilde freni patlamış bir otobüsü kullanırken hatırlıyorum. Deneyimli astronot Matt Kowalski rolünde ise George Clooney var.
Filmin konusu aslında son derece basit. Film, Hubble Teleskopu üzerine bağlanmış ve uzaydan daha net bilgi akışı sağlayabilecek bir cihazın yerleştirilmesinden sorumlu bir mühendis ile astronotların bulunduğu U.S. Space Shuttle Explorer öyküsü olarak başlar. Rutin giden bir görev, Rusların parçalanmış eski uydu parçalarının yörüngede savrulması ve kahramanlarımızın uzay aracına hızla çarpmasıyla (bu noktada biraz Soğuk Savaş filmlerinin kurgusunu andırsa da üzerinde durmayalım) kesintiye uğrar.
Zaten ne olursa bundan sonra olur. Dr. Stone, çarpışmanın sonucunda yerçekimin olmadığı bir boşluğa düşüverir. Yeryüzü ile iletişimi kopmakta ve oksijeni hızla tükenmektedir. Bundan sonra yaşananlar bir hayatta kalma ve dayanıklılık öyküsünden öte bir şey değil ancak doğum metaforunun bütün film boyunca alt metin olarak sunulması ve Stone’un hayata bağlanma serüveninin göbek bağını çağrıştıran halatlarla verilmesi son derece çarpıcı.
Öte yandan 3-D teknolojisinin getirdiği gerçeklik hissi, izleyicinin anlatının bir parçası olma hali filme bambaşka bir boyut katıyor kuşkusuz. Dr. Stone ile birlikte nefessiz kalıyor, onunla birlikte üstünüze doğru gelen uydu parçalarından sıyrılmaya çalışıyor ve dünya kürenin üstten nefes kesici güzelliğini yine birebir paylaşıyorsunuz. Hatta Amerika’da IMAX 3-D teknolojisiyle çok daha büyüleyici olacağını tahmin ettiğim görüntüler bize özel efekt teknolojisinin sinemada ne noktaya geldiğini gösteriyor.
Filmde görsel olarak zihinlere kazınan pek çok şiirsel an var. Havada damlalar olarak uçan gözyaşları ya da Stone’un kaskının ışıklarının uzay boşluğunda süzülürken onu etrafını saran yıldızlardan ayırt edilmez hale getirmesi gibi.
Meksikalı yönetmen Alfonso Cuarón araya mucizelere inanç gibi Hollywood klişeleri serpiştirse de sizleri koltuğunuzda 1,5 saat adeta hipnotize etmeyi başarıyor. Film son sahnesiyle evrimi ve yeniden doğuşu sorgularken, size sadece ayağınızı toprağa basabildiğiniz için yerçekimine şükrederek sinemadan çıkmak kalıyor.

By the time Sergio Leone got to Monument Valley in 1968 to film exteriors for Once Upon a Time in the West, its sandstone buttes – engrained in the popular consciousness by their presence in John Ford‘s westerns – had already assumed the hulking mythic grandeur the great Italian director needed for his story of American beginnings. Nuri Bilge Ceylan was surely hoping for a little of the same when he had his night convoy of murder investigators sweep their headlights across the vast prairie in last year’s Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. The auburn-grey hills around Keskin, near the capital Ankara, might not be as singular a location as the Utah valley, but they’ve got their own mute, unknowable magnificence – a suitable backdrop for Ceylan’s gloomy night of the Turkish soul.
