As the government is unwilling to declare a country-wide curfew, mayor İmamoğlu has suggested “partial restrictions” for the city of 15 million.

Despite of the coronavirus outbreak resulting in high numbers of new cases in Turkey every day, major construction projects continue full speed ahead in Istanbul, such as a mosque on a large and valuable piece of land in the city’s Levent district, an area with numerous skyscrapers and shopping malls.


Some 11 people have been detained after throwing a party in Istanbul’s Büyükçekmece district and sharing videos on social media outlets.

Istanbul buries coronavirus casualties in coffins instead of shrouds, eliminates communal funeral prayers


Persons who die from coronavirus-related complications in Istanbul are buried in coffins, an official from the Istanbul Cemeteries Directorate said, an unusual practice for the majority-muslim country.

In Islam, the dead are buried with no clothes on, but wrapped in shrouds instead.

However, anyone who dies from the coronavirus in Istanbul now gets buried in a coffin.

A tender has been lodged for the removal and reconstruction of two historical bridges along the planned route of Canal İstanbul project.
