Yesterday was the 21st birthday of Berkin Elvan, who lost his life at the age of 15 after being shot with a tear gas canister during Gezi Park protests. The family and loved ones of Elvan flew sky lanterns, “wishing justice for Berkin and all massacred children.”
Susma Platform has issued its “Censorship and Self-Censorship in Turkey: January 2019 – November 2019” report, which includes cases of censorship in media, social media, publishing industry, cinema, theater, music and visual arts.

’50 sick inmates died’ in 2019 in Turkey

Some 50 sick inmates died in prisons throughout 2019 in Turkey, according to data obtained from several non-governmental organizations.

Human rights groups have been urging the Justice Ministry to act to prevent deaths in prisons – but, so far, to no avail.

Some 7,000 applications regarding sick inmates filed by The Human Rights Association (İHD) and The Civil Society in the Penal System (CİSST) were left unanswered, with the ministry citing the need for “special investigations.”

In the early aughts the internet was less dangerous than it was disruptive. That’s changed.
