Strange days. Citizens in queues for cheap food

In Uncategorized on February 13, 2019 at 21:10

One of the consistent ruling party reminder of “ancien regime” was the existence of queues. In 2019, queues are partially back. Fast-rising inflation hit food prices and the Turkish government’s solution is to open up temporary sales sites to provide cheap food (and other basic materials later) to low-income citizens before the local elections in March. But of course, Turkish authorities are quick to find culprits for this state of affairs: “food terrorism” Whatever you understand, but definitely government is not responsible for price hikes.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called recent excessive vegetable and fruit price hikes “food terrorism,” vowing that sales launched on Feb. 11 by several municipalities across the country will lead to market control.
