R.I.P Şerif Mardin. A very big loss for Social Sciences in Turkey

In Uncategorized on September 6, 2017 at 22:27

Going beyond the local polarizations, Prof. Mardin paved the way for recent developments in social sciences in Turkey.

Şerif Mardin – Wikipedia

Şerif Mardin (born 1927) is a prominent Turkish sociologist, political scientist, academic and thinker. In a 2008 publication, he was referred to as the “doyen of Turkish sociology.”[1]

I did benefit from every one of his writings.
I would particularly point out:
  • Center and periphery in the Ottoman Empire, New York: Syracuse University Press 2005

Still a guide to understand Turkish politics.

And one of his short and forgotten piece on the lack of daemonic thinking in Turkish thought (I could not find which one was that but it always comes up in my mind).
