Turkish Parliament Deputy Speaker Ahmet Aydın on March 1 accused the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) of “almost being taken hostage” by people with “anti-Turkish agenda.”
Austria says any plans by the Turkish leader to campaign for his upcoming referendum could cause divisions.

Free speech is under fire. Victims of the president’s clampdown need the same kinds of support we once offered dissidents in the Soviet UnionIf this newspaper were published in Turkey the rest of this column might be entirely blank, except for an author photograph at the top and the words, printed in large type, “124 days deprived of freedom”. That’s what the country’s most important surviving oppositional newspaper, Cumhuriyet, regularly prints for its imprisoned columnists – with the tally of days in jail ticking up and up. One leading columnist, Kadri Gürsel, recently sent a moving letter that begins: “I salute you all with love from B block, ward number 25 of Silivri prison number 9.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has slammed Germany over its decision to ban Turkish ministers from holding events in two German cities ahead of the April 16 constitutional referendum that will decide whether the current parliamentary system should be shifted to an executive presidency
An EU statement should say that under Erdogan’s new constitution, Turkey no longer meets entry criteria and accession talks should be suspended.
Two German towns cancelled campaign events by Turkish ministers to rally support for Erdogan’s consitutional reform amid escalating tensions between the two countries over the detention of a prominent German-Turkish journalist.
The cancellation of a Turkish minister’s meeting with Turkish nationals in Germany is another example of “systematic implementation of the German deep state” against Turkish government figures who want to campaign in a country where around 3 million Turks live, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has claimed.
Turkey has reacted to Germany not granting permission to the meeting which Minister of Justice Bozdağ would attend. Minister of Foreign Affairs Çavuşoğlu has said, “This has become a systematical practice of the German deep state”.
