Facebook, Snapchat, and other social platforms have dominated conversations around journalism over the past year. While publishers have flocked to tools like Facebook Live, Instant Articles, and Snapchat Discover to reach new audiences, they’ve also worried about changing revenue models and the threats platforms pose to their businesses.

Trust has always been central to journalism and news organisations – without trust, why would audiences pay for a newspaper?
Of all media, print has been hit hardest by the online revolution, and with its demise has come a steady erosion of trust among audiences in the news they consume.
Tumblr itself has been quiet about the development, save for several Tumblr posts at livevideo.tumblr.com (first noticed by David Chartier and later reported on by TechCrunch). On Tuesday, it posted a formal update, announcing that by the end of the day users will be able to broadcast live “directly into your followers’ dashboards.” There’s no mention, of course, of Twitter’s Periscope, or of Facebook Live, where many are already live broadcasting.
In the early hours of June 12, a gunman opened fire on an LGBTI+ nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing at least 49 people and leaving another 53 injured. The performers that night were trans latinx women. This wasn’t an isolated incident.

She was shot eight times and denied treatment in hospital until she died four days later. Back in the US, a trans man was savagely beaten in Vermont on the same day. He died a week later. On May 13, a trans woman was beaten in Brooklyn. On April 28, a trans woman wasphysically and verbally attacked on a train in New York.
A Facebook executive said Tuesday that she expects the social platform will probably be “all video” in five years.
